HBNO® Lemongrass Essential Oil is steam-distilled from the fresh blades of Cymbopogon flexuosus, the East Indian lemongrass prized by aromatherapists and perfumers for its unusually high citral content (typically 75–85%), the natural compound behind lemongrass's vibrant, skin-toning, and aromatically refreshing properties. Our grass is cultivated in the volcanic-rich soils of Kerala and Karnataka, India, where monsoon rains and tropical sun produce leaves with an intensely fresh, true-to-herb aroma, never dull, never weak, never synthetic. Whether diffused in the evening to create a spa-inspired atmosphere , blended into a refreshing DIY outdoor spray , massaged into tired shoulders with a carrier oil, or mixed into a natural all-purpose cleaner that leaves your home smelling like a Thai spa, this oil earns its place on every shelf in the house. The aroma is bright, green, citrus-forward and herbaceous with a soft hay-like warmth underneath, a scent that instantly transports you from morning rush to island garden. Every batch is cruelty-free and third-party lab tested for purity and potency, no fillers, no carrier oils, no fragrance additives, just pure steam-distilled lemongrass as nature distilled it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lemongrass is naturally high in citral, geraniol, and myrcene—the same aromatic compounds that give its "cousin," Citronella, its famous botanical reputation. These volatile compounds provide a vibrant, fresh-air aroma that is a favorite for patio sprays. For a long-lasting aromatic experience outdoors, we recommend blending 25–30 drops in a witch-hazel base and refreshing the spray every 2 hours.
Never apply undiluted lemongrass oil to skin. Because of its high citral content, lemongrass is classified as a potent dermal sensitizer and can cause irritation, redness, or long-term sensitization without dilution. Always dilute to 0.5–1% for facial skin (1–2 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil) and 1–2% for body use. Always patch-test on your inner forearm for 24 hours before broader use. Pregnant women should avoid topical use entirely.
Lemongrass is one of the most versatile oils in an aromatherapy kit. Its most popular uses are: (1) Fresh-Air Outdoor Sprays , (2) Bright Scent Diffusion Blend , (3) Fresh-Looking Facial Rituals , (4) Home care and surface products , (5) Massage oil formulations , (6) soap-making and candle-pouring, where it delivers a strong, long-lasting scent throw.
Store in its original dark amber glass bottle, tightly sealed, in a cool place away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. Ideal storage is 60–75°F (15–24°C) — a pantry or cabinet works well. Properly stored, lemongrass oil has a shelf life of 2–3 years. Citral-rich oils oxidize faster in warm or humid conditions — if the aroma turns harsh, sour, or loses its bright herb character, the oil has likely oxidized and should be replaced. Refrigeration can extend shelf life by up to 12 months.
For a standard 100–200 ml ultrasonic diffuser, use 3–5 drops of Lemongrass. Because lemongrass is a strong middle-to-top note, it can easily overpower other oils — start with 2–3 drops when blending, and let the other oils anchor it. For a larger open-plan room, increase to 6–8 drops total. Run your diffuser for 30–45 minutes at a time with breaks, rather than all day, to avoid olfactory fatigue and overexposure.
For children under 2 years old, avoid lemongrass entirely — both topical and diffused. For ages 2–10, lemongrass is considered an "age-dependent" oil: diffuse only in a well-ventilated room for short periods (15–20 min), and avoid topical use below age 10 due to its sensitizing potential. For pets: dogs can generally tolerate diffused lemongrass in open, well-ventilated rooms, but never apply topically. Cats should not be exposed to lemongrass oil at all — they cannot metabolize the compounds safely. Always let animals freely leave the room and consult your veterinarian before use around pets.

Testimonials

The Botanical Backyard Shield

Living in Florida means the backyard gets heavy use. I mixed up an outdoor spray with this lemongrass oil, witch hazel, and peppermint—and we enjoyed a full patio dinner in botanical comfort. The scent is fresh and natural, not chemical. It’s my new favorite for summer evenings.

The Open-Air Spa Experience

I diffuse two drops of lemongrass with a drop of lavender every evening when I get home. Within ten minutes, the atmosphere feels expansive and serene, like an open-air spa. Smells exactly like fresh-cut lemongrass from my grandmother's Thai kitchen—nothing artificial.

The Soapmaker’s Success Secret

I've tried at least six different lemongrass oils over the past two years for my handmade soap business. HBNO's is the only one whose scent actually survives the saponification process — my 'Coconut Lemongrass' bar is now my bestseller. 4 oz at this price means my margins finally make sense.

The Balanced Skincare Ritual

Started using 2 drops in jojoba oil as part of my facial care routine. I was initially cautious because lemongrass has a strong scent, but when properly diluted, it works well in my skincare routine. I always patch-test before using new blends.

The Multi-Surface Refresh Powerhouse

Used this in a DIY floor cleaner and our whole house had a spa-like fragrance for two days. It worked well alongside my usual cleaner in the kitchen. Also dropped 4 drops into the washer with my gym clothes and it helped refresh the scent. One bottle goes a long way for multiple uses. Great value in a 4 oz size.
