Looking to buy in bulk for your business!

Steam distilled from Boswellia serrata resin grown in India, this frankincense essential oil pours out a warm, woody, slightly sweet aroma with a resinous balsamic core and faint hints of citrus and spice on the edges. It's a long-standing favorite in DIY facial skincare blends, cold-process soap making, and natural perfumery, where its base-note depth gives a finished blend the kind of finish that holds up under dilution. HBNO® offers it in a 4 oz retail size, so you have enough for serious skincare work or a real soap batch without rationing drops mid-project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Warm, woody, and slightly sweet, with a resinous balsamic core and faint hints of citrus and spice on the edges. The Boswellia serrata species specifically reads as a touch lighter and brighter than the African carterii or sacra varieties, with a noticeable pine-and-citrus lift over the deeper resin base. The scent settles in over the first 30 to 45 minutes of wear or diffusion, with the brighter top notes giving way to the heavier resin and a soft balsamic base that lingers for hours.
Store it in its dark glass bottle, tightly capped, somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. A pantry shelf or a cabinet away from the stove works well. Sealed and properly stored, shelf life is about 5 to 6 years from the distillation date for resin-derived oils, which is longer than most essential oils thanks to the high resin content. Once opened, it stays good for around 3 to 4 years. If the scent goes flat, develops a sharp turpentine edge, or the color darkens significantly, it's past its useful life. The 4 oz size is enough for daily skincare use, soap-making, and perfumery work without aging out before you finish the bottle.
No. Frankincense is generally well tolerated compared to hot oils like cinnamon or oregano, but it should always be diluted before skin contact. For daily facial skincare, dilute at 1 to 2 percent in a carrier oil, which works out to about 6 to 12 drops per 1 oz of jojoba, argan, or rosehip seed carrier. For body application or roll-on perfume, you can go up to 5 to 7 percent dilution. For sensitive skin, drop to 0.5 to 1 percent. Avoid contact with eyes, ears, and mucous membranes even when diluted.
Mix 1 drop of HBNO® Frankincense Essential Oil into 1 teaspoon of jojoba or sweet almond carrier oil. Apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm, about the size of a dime. Cover with a bandage and leave it on for 24 hours without washing the area. If you notice any redness, itching, burning, or swelling, stop use immediately, wipe the area with more carrier oil (not water, which spreads the oil), and rinse afterward with a mild soap. Pregnant or nursing users should consult their healthcare provider before adding any new essential oils to a routine.
All four come from trees in the Boswellia genus, but each species is harvested in a different region and produces a slightly different aromatic profile. Boswellia carterii is the most common in retail, harvested in Somalia and Ethiopia, with a brighter and more citrus-pine character. Boswellia serrata, which is what HBNO® offers, comes from India and reads as a touch lighter and more pine-forward than carterii, with a faster, more refreshed top note. Boswellia frereana is the "Coptic" frankincense from northern Somalia, sweeter and used in fine perfumery. Boswellia sacra is the Omani and Yemeni species, often considered the most premium, chemically similar to carterii but with a slightly richer base. For most DIY skincare, soap making, and natural perfumery use cases, serrata is well-suited and offers strong value compared to the rarer sacra and frereana grades.
HBNO® sources its frankincense essential oil from India, where Boswellia serrata trees are tapped for resin (often called "tears") that hardens before being collected. The resin is steam distilled at the production region rather than bulk-shipped and re-processed elsewhere, which preserves the brighter, pine-forward profile a real Indian serrata oil should have. Quality is verified through GC/MS testing to confirm botanical identity and constituent percentages (alpha-thujene, alpha-pinene, and the broader monoterpene profile that characterizes serrata), batch by batch.

Testimonials

My evening face oil for the last 4 months

I mix 6 drops with rosehip and jojoba in a 1 oz bottle. Use it every other night before bed. Skin looks more even and feels noticeably softer in the morning. The 4 oz HBNO bottle is going to last me well past a year.

Soap that gets repeat orders

0.3 oz with sweet orange and lavender per pound in cold-process bars. The resin notes deepened through the 5-week cure and customers at the farmers market kept coming back for more. The HBNO 4 oz size lasted me through 13 batches.

Switched from a $30 boutique bottle

I was paying $30 for 10 ml from another retailer. Bought the HBNO 4 oz for less than $20 and it's the same Boswellia serrata, same India origin, just an honest size. Won't be going back.

Perfect base note for my roll-on perfume

8 drops in a 10 ml roll-on with myrrh and sweet orange. Lasts a full 7 hours and gets noticed without being heavy. The serrata reads brighter than the carterii I used before, which actually works better for my blend.

Finally a clearly labeled species

Most retailers just say 'frankincense' on the bottle. HBNO names the Boswellia serrata species directly, which I needed for my skincare formulation. Three reorders in 8 months.
