Frequently Asked Questions

Atlas Cedarwood essential oil is steam-distilled from the wood of Cedrus atlantica, a true cedar species native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The scent is warm, woody, and soft-balsamic, with a quiet camphor undertone that gives the oil real depth as a base note. Most people use it in diffuser blends for a grounded, evening-room scent, in DIY scalp and beard oils alongside a carrier like jojoba, in hobbyist soap and candle scenting, and as a base note in DIY perfumery. HBNO® sells it certified organic and steam-distilled in retail-friendly sizes.
Store the bottle in a cool, dark cabinet between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, upright, with the cap tight. Sealed and unopened, HBNO® Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil holds its scent for about 3 to 5 years, since woody base-note oils are unusually stable compared with citrus or herbal oils. Once opened, plan to enjoy it within 2 to 3 years for the brightest profile. The scent naturally rounds out and deepens over time, which many DIY perfumers actually prefer. Keep it in the original amber glass bottle rather than transferring to clear glass.
Cedarwood Atlas is a strong essential oil, so dilution is required before any skin contact. For a face blend, dilute to 0.5 to 1%, which is roughly 1 drop per 2 teaspoons of carrier oil. For a scalp, body, or beard blend, dilute to 1 to 2%, or about 1 to 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil. Good carrier choices include Jojoba Carrier Oil, Argan Carrier Oil Organic, and Sweet Almond Carrier Oil. Always patch test the diluted blend on your inner forearm for 24 hours before broader use, and keep the oil away from the eyes, ears, and mucous membranes.
Mix 1 drop of HBNO® Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil with 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil like jojoba or sweet almond. Apply 2 drops of that diluted blend to the inside of your forearm, then leave it alone for 24 hours. Watch for redness, itching, or unusual warmth different from the surrounding skin. If anything shows up, stop use and wipe the area with a clean carrier oil, since oil dissolves oil better than water does. Consult your healthcare provider before using on children under 10, or while pregnant or nursing.
The aroma is warm, woody, soft-balsamic, and slightly sweet, with a quiet camphor edge that gives it more lift than Virginia or Texas cedarwoods. Compared with Himalayan Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara), Atlas tends to come across drier and more resinous, where Himalayan tends to feel softer and sweeter. Compared with Virginia Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana), Atlas is a true cedar with a richer, more complex profile, while Virginia is technically a juniper with a sharper, more pencil-shaving character. In a diffuser, Atlas Cedarwood typically settles into the room over the first 20 to 30 minutes and lingers for an hour or more after the session ends.
HBNO® sources its Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil from certified organic supply chains in Morocco, where Cedrus atlantica grows natively in the High Atlas mountain region. Each batch is steam-distilled from the wood (not leaves or bark) without solvents, then batch tested using GC/MS to confirm the himachalene and atlantone profile and screen for adulteration. The certificate of analysis is available on request. Cedrus atlantica is listed by the IUCN as an endangered species, so working with legitimate, traceable supply is part of why this oil costs what it does.

Testimonials

My grounded evening diffuser

I run 4 drops of this with 2 drops of bergamot in my living room diffuser most evenings in fall. The room smells like a quiet wood-paneled library for about two hours after I shut it off. One bottle has lasted me almost four months.

Best beard oil blend I've made

I mixed 5 drops of this with 2 drops of lavender into 1 oz of jojoba carrier oil and the scent is exactly what I was after. Warm and woody, not perfumey. My partner actually asked what I'd been using after about three days of daily use.

Solid base note for my soap making

I tested this at 1% in a melt-and-pour cold-process batch and the scent throw stayed strong through curing. I sell my soap at a local market and the cedarwood-lavender bar has been my best seller for the last two seasons running.

Switched from a $38 boutique bottle

I'd been buying a 0.5 oz boutique Atlas cedarwood for almost three times what HBNO charges per ounce. The HBNO oil smells just as clean and woody, and the COA on request was the deciding factor for me.

My consistent reorder for two years

I've been ordering this every six months for almost two years and the scent has been steady across batches. I use it in diffuser blends, a scalp massage oil with jojoba, and occasionally in DIY closet sachets. Reliable and well priced for the size.
