Frequently Asked Questions

Cedarwood Essential Oil is steam-distilled from the wood of Juniperus virginiana, also known as Virginia Cedarwood or Eastern Red Cedar. Despite the name, it is technically a juniper species rather than a true cedar, but it has been sold under the "cedarwood" name for over a century in aromatherapy and DIY perfumery. The scent is sharp, dry, and classically woody, with a pencil-shaving character that anchors a blend. Most people use it for diffuser blends, DIY beard oils alongside a carrier like jojoba, hobbyist soap and candle scenting, and as a base note in DIY perfumery. HBNO® sells it steam-distilled in retail-friendly sizes.
Store the bottle in a cool, dark cabinet between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, upright, with the cap tight. Sealed and unopened, HBNO® Cedarwood Essential Oil holds its scent for about 3 to 5 years, since woody base-note oils are unusually stable compared with citrus or herbal oils. Once opened, plan to enjoy it within 2 to 3 years for the brightest profile. The scent naturally rounds out and softens over time, which many DIY perfumers actually prefer in a base note. Keep it in the original amber glass bottle rather than transferring to clear glass.
Cedarwood is a strong essential oil, so dilution is required before any skin contact. For a face blend, dilute to 0.5 to 1%, which is roughly 1 drop per 2 teaspoons of carrier oil. For a beard, scalp, or body blend, dilute to 1 to 2%, or about 1 to 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil. Good carrier choices include Jojoba Carrier Oil, Argan Carrier Oil Organic, and Sweet Almond Carrier Oil. Always patch test the diluted blend on your inner forearm for 24 hours before broader use, and keep the oil away from the eyes, ears, and mucous membranes.
Mix 1 drop of HBNO® Cedarwood Essential Oil with 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil like jojoba or sweet almond. Apply 2 drops of that diluted blend to the inside of your forearm, then leave it alone for 24 hours. Watch for any redness, itching, or unusual warmth that feels different from the surrounding skin. If anything shows up, stop use and wipe the area with a clean carrier oil, since oil dissolves oil better than water does. Consult your healthcare provider before using on children under 10, or while pregnant or nursing. If you keep pets in the home, consult your veterinarian before diffusing any essential oil in shared spaces.
This Virginia Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) has a sharp, dry, classically woody scent with a quiet pencil-shaving character. The scent settles into a diffuser room over the first 15 to 25 minutes and lingers for over an hour after the session ends. Compared with Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), this one is drier and sharper, while Atlas is warmer, sweeter, and more balsamic. Compared with Texas Cedarwood (Juniperus mexicana), Virginia is softer and less smoky, while Texas tends to feel more rugged and resinous. Compared with Himalayan Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara), Virginia is more pencil-like, while Himalayan is sweeter and softer. HBNO® also sells Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil Organic as a sister SKU for buyers who specifically want the Moroccan true-cedar profile.
HBNO® sources its Cedarwood Essential Oil from established North American supply of Juniperus virginiana, the species most commonly distilled for the cedarwood category. Each batch is steam-distilled from the wood (not bark or leaves) without solvents, then batch tested using GC/MS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry) to confirm the cedrol and thujopsene profile and screen for adulteration. The certificate of analysis is available on request. HBNO® does not use fillers or carrier dilution in the bottle, so what you buy is the steam-distilled oil at full strength.

Testimonials

Anchor scent for my evening diffuser

I run 5 drops of this with 2 drops of lavender most evenings and the room smells like a wood-paneled study for about two hours after I shut the diffuser off. One 4 oz bottle has lasted me about five months at this pace.

Best beard oil I've ever blended

Mixed 5 drops of this with 3 drops of bergamot into 1 oz of jojoba and the scent is exactly what I was after. Dry, woody, masculine without being a cologne bomb. My partner mentioned it within the first three days

Reliable base note in my candle line

I've been blending this at 1% into a melt-and-pour cold-process soap and at 7% in soy candles for almost a year. The scent throw stays consistent batch to batch and the price per ounce works for my margins at the farmer's market.

Switched from a 15 ml MLM bottle

I'd been buying a 15 ml cedarwood from one of the big network brands for almost double per ml. HBNO's smells just as clean and woody, the bottle is more than twice the size, and I got a COA when I asked for one. Done switching.

My everyday cedarwood

I keep this on my craft shelf for everyday DIY use, then I use HBNO's Cedarwood Atlas for special candles where I want a warmer profile. Having both species available from the same shop has been the most convenient setup for the last 18 months of reorders.
