Frequently Asked Questions

Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) and True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) come from different plants and offer different benefits. True lavender grows at higher altitudes and has a soft, sweet, delicate floral aroma with very little camphor, making it ideal for sleep support, relaxation, gentle skincare, and calming aromatherapy, especially for children or the elderly. Lavandin is a natural hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender, with a fresher scent and slightly camphoraceous, herbaceous notes. It is usually more affordable due to its higher yield and works well for energizing diffuser blends, natural cleaning, soap or candle making, muscle relief, and everyday household use. If you want gentle bedtime relaxation, choose true lavender. For versatile and budget friendly daily use, lavandin is an excellent option.
To safely dilute lavandin essential oil for topical use, mix it with a carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond, fractionated coconut, grapeseed, or argan oil. For the face or sensitive skin, use a 1% dilution which equals about 6 drops per 1 oz 30 ml of carrier oil. For general body use or massage, use 2 to 3% which is 12 to 18 drops per 1 oz. For localized muscle relief, 5% or 30 drops per 1 oz can be used, while 10% or 60 drops per 1 oz should only be used occasionally on small areas. Add the drops to your measured carrier oil in a clean glass bottle, shake well, and always perform a 24 hour patch test before full use. Never apply undiluted oil directly to skin, avoid eyes and sensitive areas, and use lower dilutions for children, during pregnancy, or if you have sensitive skin.
Lavandin essential oil typically lasts 2 to 3 years from the distillation date and about 1 to 2 years after opening when stored properly. Keep it in its original amber or cobalt glass bottle, tightly sealed, and store in a cool, dark place away from heat, sunlight, and humidity. Avoid bathrooms, cars, or transferring it to plastic or clear containers. Signs of oxidation include a harsh or turpentine like smell, significant darkening, thickening, or reduced aroma quality. If it still smells fresh and floral, it is usually fine to use, but heavily oxidized oil should not be applied to skin and is better reserved for cleaning or diffuser use.
Lavandin essential oil is generally safe for diffusing during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used in moderation, such as 2 to 3 drops in a well ventilated room for short periods. Topical use requires more caution. It is best to avoid topical application during the first trimester. In the second and third trimesters, it can be used at a low 1% dilution or less and applied only to areas like shoulders, arms, or legs, avoiding the abdomen and lower back. During breastfeeding, 1 to 2% dilution is considered safe, but do not apply to the breast area. Because lavandin contains more camphor than true lavender, always use small amounts, patch test first, and consult a healthcare provider before use. If any discomfort, nausea, or irritation occurs, discontinue immediately.
Lavandin essential oil can help with stress and anxiety, but its effect is more uplifting and gently stimulating compared to true lavender. Because lavandin contains higher camphor and slightly different calming compounds, it is better suited for daytime stress, nervous tension, mental fatigue, and staying calm yet focused during work or study. It may provide mild relaxation, but it is not as sedating as true lavender and is less effective for insomnia or bedtime routines. For deep sleep and nighttime anxiety, true lavender is the better choice, while lavandin works well for productive, daytime calm without drowsiness.
Yes, lavandin essential oil is excellent for homemade cleaning products and is often more effective than true lavender due to its higher camphor content, which gives it stronger antimicrobial and light degreasing properties. It helps reduce common household bacteria, neutralizes odors naturally, and leaves a fresh, clean scent that works well in kitchens and bathrooms. Lavandin is also cost effective, making it practical for surface sprays, floor washes, toilet cleaners, laundry freshening, and room sprays. While it is not an EPA registered disinfectant for medical level sanitation, it works very well for everyday household cleaning when combined with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, or Castile soap.

Testimonials

"Enjoy Peaceful Evenings with HBNO Lavandin"

I know everyone says true lavender is the sleep oil, but honestly, diffusing HBNO's lavandin 1-2 hours before bed (4 drops with 2 drops cedarwood) fills my room with a relaxing, soothing aroma. At $9.99 I can run my diffuser every single night without worrying about 'wasting' expensive oil like I did with the $35 true lavender I barely used because I was rationing it.

"My Entire House Smells Amazing and I Ditched All Chemical Cleaners"

I was spending $20-25/month on Mrs. Meyer's and Method cleaning products until I discovered HBNO's lavandin oil and started making my own sprays, floor wash, and toilet cleaner for literally pennies per batch. One $10 bottle has lasted me 4 months so far (still half full!), my kitchen and bathrooms smell fresh and herbal instead of fake-floral-chemical, and I feel so much better knowing my toddler isn't breathing harsh fumes from conventional cleaners.

"Soap Maker's Dream: Quality Scent That Lasts and Doesn't Break the Bank"

As a small-batch soap maker selling at farmer's markets, finding affordable, high-quality essential oils is make-or-break for my margins. I was paying $40 for 4oz of 'true' lavender that was only slightly better than HBNO's $9.99 lavandin, and honestly, lavandin's stronger scent holds better in cold process soap anyway (doesn't fade as fast during cure). I've switched all my lavender soap lines to HBNO lavandin and customers can't tell the difference; plus my profit margin went from 30% to 60% on those bars.

"Work-From-Home Calm and Focused"

I enjoy diffusing HBNO's lavandin during my workday. True lavender made me too drowsy (I'd literally start nodding off at my desk), but HBNO's lavandin provides a pleasant, calming aroma while I stay focused and productive. I keep my diffuser running in my home office from 9–5 (4 drops lavandin + 2 drops bergamot), and I love how the scent fills my space and enhances my work environment.

"Why I'm Never Paying $35 for Essential Oil Again"

I fell into the MLM essential oil trap and was spending $30-40 per bottle on 'therapeutic grade' oils that honestly don't work any better than HBNO's lavandin at $9.99. Same organic certification, same steam distillation, same European sourcing. But without the cultish upline and manipulated pricing. I bought HBNO lavandin to test it for cleaning, loved the fresh scent so much I now use it in my diffuser, bath soaks, DIY lotion, and face toner. One bottle lasts 2-3 months with daily use, and I don't feel guilty using it generously like I did watching those expensive MLM bottles drain.
