What Is USDA Organic Certification?

USDA organic certification is verification, under the National Organic Program, that a crop or processed ingredient was produced and handled to the federal organic standard. The USDA writes the standard but does not inspect operations itself; accredited certifying agents do, reviewing an organic system plan, inspecting the operation each year and confirming that every input is permitted and traceable. For essential oils that reaches from the grower through distillation and handling, so a certificate describes a chain of operations rather than a single audit, and it follows the material rather than the company.

HBNO's USDA Organic status is certified through OneCert and currently covers 29 materials in a catalog of more than 1,000, including organic lavender, peppermint and lemon essential oils, carrier oils such as castor, jojoba and argan, and organic rose floral water. The remainder of the catalog is conventional, so a formulator planning an organic claim should confirm the individual SKU against the current certificate.
