The five specifications that decide the choice
Compare waxes on five things: melt point, maximum fragrance load, cost per pound, glass adhesion, and cure time.
Melt point determines pour temperature, how the candle behaves in a warm room, and how the melt pool forms in use. Maximum fragrance load is the most commercially consequential figure, because it caps the scent throw achievable. Cost per pound is straightforward but should be assessed alongside yield rather than in isolation.
Glass adhesion, sometimes called wet spotting when it fails, is how well the wax stays bonded to the container wall through temperature cycling. It is a cosmetic issue that generates real complaints. Cure time is the period between pour and the candle reaching its full scent performance, and it determines how much finished-goods inventory you have to hold before shipping.

How the five compare
No wax wins on all five criteria, which is why blends dominate commercial production.

Soy. The natural-positioning default. Moderate melt point, fragrance load typically in the 6 to 10 percent region, mid-range cost. Its weaknesses are cosmetic: frosting, uneven tops and glass adhesion problems are common and require additives or blending to control. Cure time is on the longer side, often one to two weeks for full performance.

Paraffin. The performance benchmark. It carries the highest fragrance loads, throws strongly, adheres well to glass and has a short cure time. It is inexpensive. The constraint is entirely positioning: it is petroleum derived, which is incompatible with a natural claim.

Coconut. The premium natural option. Excellent fragrance load capacity, very good adhesion and smooth tops, and a soft luxurious appearance. It is the most expensive of the five and is usually blended rather than used alone because it is very soft.

Beeswax. The traditional choice, with a high melt point and long burn time. It carries the lowest fragrance load of the five because its own honey-adjacent aroma competes with added fragrance, and it is expensive and supply constrained. Best used where the wax itself is the selling point.

Palm. Distinctive crystalline finish and good performance, with sustainability documentation as the central sourcing question. Certification traceability matters more here than for the others.

Fragrance load is where the wax choice actually bites
The wax sets a ceiling on fragrance load, and a brand that specifies a scent-forward product on a low-load wax has created a problem it cannot solve with more fragrance.
Exceeding a wax's capacity causes separation, sweating and pooling of oil on the surface, and it can affect burn safety. Staying well below the effective threshold produces a candle that looks fine and does not sell twice. The working figure is established by burn testing the specific wax, wick, vessel and fragrance combination, not by adopting a number from a supplier datasheet.
This is also where the choice interacts with fragrance sourcing. A fragrance oil compounded for candle performance behaves differently from an essential oil in a heated melt pool, and some essential oil constituents are volatile enough that performance is inconsistent. Paraffin carries the highest loads and throws most strongly, followed by coconut among the natural options. Why does soy wax frost and pull away from the glass?
Both are crystallisation and contraction behaviours inherent to soy rather than defects in a particular lot. How long does a candle need to cure before shipping?

Is coconut wax worth the premium over soy?
Where the product is premium positioned, often yes, because it carries higher fragrance loads and gives smoother tops and better adhesion. It is soft, so it is usually blended rather than used alone. For a mass price point the premium is difficult to recover, and a soy blend is the more sensible commercial choice.
Can the same fragrance load be used across different waxes?
No, and assuming so is a common cause of separation and sweating. Each wax has its own capacity, and the same fragrance at the same percentage can perform well in one and fail in another. Re-test the load whenever the wax changes, including a change of supplier for nominally the same wax.
